Finally, I am posting! My friend told me to start blogging weeks ago and here I am finally doing the deed. I am calling this blog Roll Over and Play Dead for my dog Harvey. Who does neither, by the way, but someday he will, I hope. He is a little neurotic and the sweetest dog on the face of the earth.
Yesterday it began raining in Lubbock around 6am and finally finished around 6am this morning. The rain was needed but enough already! Roads are flooded and the Mayor declared it an emergency which is never fun. And at my house it all comes back to Harvey.
I adopted Harvey in December and he has just been such a joy. But he is on such a routine that any little upset in that routine and he's not quite sure what to do with himself. We usually walk every morning for 45 minutes and every night for 30. Yesterday was not a day for walking. As soon as I opened the door Harvey knew to head for the nearest tree do his business and run back to the door! After a few minutes the rain got softer so I put Harvey in the back yard while I got ready for work. 15 minutes later I heard his feet hit the partially open door and in he came running! He had had enough. That was a huge accomplishment for Harvey, he doesn't like doorways--did I mention he's a little neurotic? So I didn't even mind the muddy footprints racing from the backdoor to the guest bedroom--I was so excited he walked through the door on his own!
Harvey was adopted from a local no kill shelter. I'm not sure what happened to him but he showed a lot of signs of neglect and abuse. He walks perimeters of rooms, backs himself into a corner to be petted, or even to have his leash put on and a slew of others. Slowly over the last 8 months he's conquered fears and discovered new ones.
Now, instead of feeling sad, I just have to laugh at the list of things that scare him.
Ceiling fans--I can't begin to fathom
Bottled water -- but only when I carry it on our walks
Kids on bikes, skateboards or scooters -- I think they just move to fast
Construction cones -- again, I can't fathom any explanation
and the list goes on.
But the good thing is he has never once chewed my shoes, gotten into the trash or torn anything apart. I don't think he knows he's expected to! If only I could find a guy so well behaved!
